Have a Heart <3

My wonderful husband of 18 years suffered a massive heart attack on April 14th, 2007. That was the day that my life was forever changed. It was his left aortic descending artery that was the major culprit. It was causing fluids in his lungs and the blood was being forced back into his heart. Unfortunately, this type of damage never heals. He had several lesions in his arteries forcing these issues that were unfortunately inevitable. They installed a balloon pump and he spent weeks in Cardiac ICU. he was given 2 stents and a 3rd was aborted because he flatlined, (died) on the operating table. His heart is terribly damaged.

A healthy heart pumps about 1 cup of blood with every beat, my husbands heart is pumping about 2 tablespoons. He is a candidate for a heart transplant, but there is no guarantee that a matching donor will be found in time. Our other option is an ICD (implantable cardioverter defibrillator). He fights daily to live. We need prayers to heal him and strengthen him until the surgery is performed, we need prayers that he will survive the surgery.

Financially we are in dire need. To date medical costs are in the neighborhood of hundreds of thousands of dollars and we still have much more hospital time ahead of us. He fights to live and our faith is strong. We believe in the power of prayer and know that God does hear us. The more that can pray for Mitch, the better. Our household income has been cut in half. I continue to work and am happy to have a job. But we are seriously falling behind in our everyday bills. It is impossible to make it on one income. He will not qualify for disability until AFTER the surgery and will not be able to work. His heart is currently functioning at 20%.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
I beg for your prayers.

Things to pray about for my family:
We want free flowing blood through his heart and body.
Pray that he lives
Pray that he survives the implant
Pray that our financial struggles are lessened.
Pray that we have a place to call home after the surgery.
Pray that churches and those in masses pray for us.
Pray for miracles in our lives.

thank you and may god bless you always.

Update - about 1 year ago:

We go this morning to have the final test that will be needed before setting the date for the implant. My husband is very apprehensive. This test is very dangerous and taxing on his heart. Although, it is in a controlled environment, the risks are always there that things may not go well.
Please pray for him this Friday morning. Pray that this test will go smoothly and provide direction to the medical staff to proceed in the right direction. Every minute is a victory and your prayers are so appreciated.

Update - about 1 year ago:

We arrived a little early and they called my husband in a few minutes after we got there. The appointment was for 8:00 a.m., but by 7:35 they had him in the testing room. I waited in the area down the hall from the testing room, where there is a small tv and a few chairs. I settled in, only to realize that I forgot my tape recorder. I will often tape the discussions, thoughts, and critical information, whatever may be important- so that I can refer back to them later. I laid it next to my purse last night and walked out the door without it.
I urge everyone to do this when you are faced with a lot of information and it is being thrown at you. It helps so much to not second guess things later.
So I got out my trusty 3X5memo pad.

I asked if I could speak with the doctor, I told the doctor that I had some real concerns about the surgery occurring around the time that we would need to be moving (losing the house) and that I was worried that my husband would have a hard time recovering while we were moving (into a travel trailer). She said that the recovery time is 6 weeks, no lifting of any kind, for any reason. That I really shouldn’t count on him between now and the end of the 6 week period to move anything. Which I have not and will not. I needed to reiterate that time is a concern and the doc assured me that if the tests result the way that they are expecting to that we would be having the implant surgery as quickly as possible, anyway.

The doctor came out after the test and told me that everything went fine and that my husband was okay.

Breathe Breathe, thank you God...

Doc also mentioned a major concern right off the bat- it appears that the muscle that controls the blood flow and oxygen to the body, appeared to have looked weaker than anyone had anticipated, it was confirmed that it was indeed weaker, especially after re-reviewing the echocardiogram results. Meaning that it is getting worse, not better!!!!
We are very concerned about this. There was a long uncomfortable silence between us. I wasn’t sure what to say or ask, I think she sensed this and said that the ICD (implantable cardioverrter defibrillator) is a good option. (Heart transplant is the second option) But the risks are extremely high that he won't receive the perfect donor match in time. That this alone could prompt action, sooner- than later. We will have to wait to ssee what the cardio team that has been assigned to my husband seems to conclude.

I am not one to ask for anything, but I am begging each of you to please pray / continue praying for my husband,Mitch.

Thank you all for your prayers, please continue to pray and ask for God to get us through this, to strengthen Mitch and make his heart be the best that it can be, even though doctors say it won’t get better or improve.
There is nothing too big for God. Nothing!

Update - about 1 year ago:

We are moving very quickly on the implant (Good because he needs it and not good because the situation is critical.)
EF is up by 2 %! (AWESOME!)
Because it helps the surgery survival rate go up! (YESSSSSS)

Not much else has changed. (No surprise)
THE EF is enough to cause me to be dancing! (In my dancing shoes!)

Mitch is NOT to push himself. (Not a problem)
Mitch is NOT to get short of breath. (No Bill Dance or Cabela's Catalog)

Any cancellations and we will be put into the first available slot!
(Getting his bags packed!)
Which means that we could get the call tomorrow!
(We will be sitting beside the phone from here on out!)
Maria has called Rose Garcia, the procedure scheduler. (We are moving forward)

The assessed damage from the heart attack is quite severe. (No real surprises there.)

His situation is definitely life threatening. (Yep, we knew that.)

Severe Ischemia, oxygen deprivation is prevalent.
Ischemia (is-KE'me-ah) is a condition in which the blood flow (and thus oxygen) is restricted to a part of the body. Cardiac ischemia is the name for lack of blood flow and oxygen to the heart muscle.

CLARIFICATION
*************

Mitch will be tested for Nocturnal Occsymetry. This will test the oxygen levels while he is sleeping. It is suspected that these numbers drop greatly while he is sleeping, if we know this, we can take steps so that it is less taxing on his heart, especially while he sleeps..

Other business:
Good news on the house!
If things progress as rapidly as they are we will have time for Mitch to recover in the house. This is huge people! You have no idea how badly I have stressed about him recovering in the travel trailer or a motel!

Please keep the prayers coming.
THEY ARE WORKING

PSALM: 2714 Wait on the Lord: Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart.

Please also pray that I don't get fired for posting this from work. But it was such GREAT news!

I love you all so much!

Update - about 1 year ago:

Cabella's collection agency called today...Worlds Foremost bank.....yelling at Mitch and threatening him with sending law enforcement to our house to arrest him. Accusing him of making up eveything about his condition. How teribly rude and insensitive! The account is in my name, not his. I am furious by these people for treating him so horribly and yelling at him. Please pray that I have patience to pay these people off and the patience to deal with them without cursing.

Dear God: Please help this family as they face some major difficulties. Reach out and touch Mitch with your healing hand and grant him a full life filled with your love and the love of his family. Then he may witness to your power. Through Jesus Christ I pray.

(I too suffer from heart disease and have been disabled for five years, although I haven't been approved for disability yet. I applied in December of 2005. I know all states have different laws, but in Texas, you can ask in writing that the collectors stop contacting you, and they have to except for an occasional NON-THREATENING reminder. Please remember to take care of your home bills and the like first since you do not want to lose your home. I'm not an expert, I'm just relaying what I've read and heard. And if I can be of further assistance, please let me know. I may be one of the few people on here that know the feeling that you could go whenever you get one of "those spells". I'm just happy and joyous that I'm at peace with our Lord Jesus Christ.)

"Again, I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them" Matthew 18:18-20 He is always in our midst!

I feel for you and you the family. we are going though a big bump in the road of life too.My husband has always been in the best of shape.never sick, worked hard all his life untill 31/2 years ago. he fell off a loading dock backwards.the man driving the forklift didn't put the dock plate downand when he came out of the trailer(my husband was a truck driver) my husband steped back because the forklift backend jump up and came towards him. he broke his neck, has a brain injury, just had a stroke3 days ago,and the list goes on. i will pray real hard that GOD will touch him and he will receive the heart he needs, and don't worry about the money, the LORD above is looking out for you. you keep the faith in him and he will guide you. there are things we can't control. And one is money that is the least of my worries, so my friend don't worry about that you waste your energy that could be used on other things.mostly your husband.and you need to be strong for him. it's not easy i know.we have been married 37 years and i've never seen so many grown men cry since my husband has gone down hill. but i'm not giving up on him.there will always be a gilmer of hope that something will change for him.so i will pray for you and you can email me lexienlaney@yahoo.com. may GOD touch both of you.it's hard but you know the man up above is with you always.and we all know our life has already been written, it's how we handle our self in these times. my self i try to do for others, and that does not take money it takes something we all have just time. do a little something for someone, you will feel better. but it has to come from your heart, the one thing your husband needs. good luck and may GOD BLESS you both. cindy
